Steering Committee

The following women were awarded travel funding to attend the annual NCRA/ANREC conference in Edmonton, Alberta in June 2004. These women formed the core steering committee for the Women's Hands and Voices project and participated in monthly conference calls, workshops, surveys, and regular online discussions. They were assisted by numerous other women, who also attended workshops at the conference and advised the researchers and consultants. The whole group acted as the steering committee for the project.

Women's Hands and Voices employed several women to complete the work directed by the steering committee:

Researcher • Elleni Centime Zeleke
Centime is currently a PhD student in Social and Political Thought at York University. She has a masters in Communications from Concordia University in Montreal. She was active at Co-op Radio (CFRO) in Vancouver and produced a twenty-part series called Persepctives in Development. She was Co-op's outreach coordinator and co-produced a show called Obaa: A weekly feminist spoken word show. She worked on a project for youth at risk in Vancouver's downtown east side, and also worked on the feminist newspaper Kinesis in the 1990's.

Gender Analysis Consultant • Maren Hancock
Maren is a former programmer and staff person at CiTR in Vancouver, with an MA in women's studies and ten years experience with steering committees and working groups. She has organized workshops and fundraising events, and published academic and arts articles. She's also a well-known local deejay and member of the band Stinkmitt.

Gender Analysis Consultant • Sharmeen Khan
Sharmeen is the former station manager of CFUV-FM in Victoria. She is the former centre coordinator of Vancouver Status of Women and is currently a programmer at Co-op Radio in Vancouver. She has extensive experience in facilitation and workshop development, alternative media, anti-oppression training and non-profit work.

Project Coordinator • Fiona York
Fiona has been involved with campus and community radio for almost twenty years and was on the board of the National Campus and Community Radio Association for five years, including three terms as president. Most recently, she was the Station Coordinator at CKDU-FM in Halifax.

Designer • Lisa Lunn
Lisa is a former programmer at CJSR-FM in Edmonton. She is still involved with the station, primarily through organizing a monthly live music broadcast, which travels to various venues in Edmonton. While she spends most of her time in front of a computer in her work as a graphic designer, she also has a rich background in working with not-for-profit organizations and sings in a rock band called Pangina.

Project Supervisor • Freya Zaltz
Freya is a former president and director of the board of directors of the National Campus and Community Radio Association. She has also worked and volunteered af CFRO-FM in Vancouver, CFUV in Victoria, CJSF-FM in Burnaby and Kootenay Co-op Radio in Nelson, B.C.
