The purpose of this position is to develop and execute a series of media skills training workshops for both novice and experienced volunteers at CHLY, as well as a Summer Radio Camp. CHLY needs to train its volunteers in a consistent manner, and these workshops will help to create the materials necessary to do this. These workshops will be developed in the fall of 2018, and executed during the spring for student and community volunteers. These skills training workshops will also be developed into training materials for children grades five through twelve for a Summer Radio Camp to be held during the Summer. It is hoped that the Summer Radio Camp will increase youth interests in radio, media, broadcasting, journalism, and see increased participation in CHLY.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
The applicant is passionate and has experience in campus-community radio and broadcasting, or a similar field.
Passionate about / experience with campus / community (public) radio; audio production skills (hardware and software).
Professional oral, written, digital, and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Experience working with children.
Experience developing workshops / course materials.
Must obtain a police records check prior to being officially hired (this is mandatory if working with children / youth)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead in the development of workshops in broadcasting, recording, interview, and general media training for Student Members, Community Members, and secondary school students in the community.
Lead in the creation of six to ten media training workshops complete with training materials in the Fall Semester.
Schedule, coordinate and run training sessions and workshops from January to June 2019.
Lead in the creation and execution of a Summer Radio Camp for children in grade five through twelve.
Foster improved, consistent and confident on and off-air media skills for all volunteer show hosts and producers/programmers.
Host one on one training sessions with volunteers.
Organize a seminar/panel discussion on media and broadcasting as part of the workshop series.
Develop a strong team of volunteer audio editors to delegate to.
Improved quality in the editing of public service announcements, and station IDs.
Increase youth Grades 5-12, VIU Students, and indigenous youth participation in station activities.
Write and record public service announcements for local music, arts and cultural events in the community, as well as other nonprofit community groups.
Assist existing staff to develop volunteer intake policies and procedures.
Assist in the creation of marketing materials to help promote workshops at the VIU campus and in the broadcast range (Comox Valley to Cowichan Valley + Southern Sunshine Coast).
Assist in organizing station events in the community.
Design and implement an evaluation process for training sessions, workshops, and summer camps.
Compensation: Rate of pay is $17.50/hr based on 35 hours/week.
Official start date: September 3rd 2018. This is a limited term one year position ending August 31st 2019.
