This job is partially funded through a Canada Summer Job Grant. As such, only Students who meet the following criteria may apply:
is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year;
intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year;
is a student in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only), vocational or technical program;
is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and
is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
The Station Assistant will be working within a broadcast facility that provides a community service to its listeners. They will work with recording and editing audio, assist with social media, work in a broadcast booth, and assist with the creation of training manuals. They will also assist with the creation of programming relating to indigenous peoples and the LGBTQ2 community.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Write and record public service announcements for local music, arts and cultural events in community, as well as other nonprofit community groups.
Assist existing staff to develop volunteer intake policies and procedures that benefit youth at Vancouver Island University and possibly post secondary students.
Assist in the creation of marketing materials to help promote the station at the VIU campus and in the broadcast range (Comox Valley to Cowichan Valley + Southern Sunshine Coast).
Assisting and organizing station events in the community.
Assist in development of workshops in broadcasting, recording, interview, and general media training for VIU Students and secondary students in community.
OTHER DETAILS / MENTORING
Will report to the Executive Coordinator (EC) of CHLY and receive mentoring and direction from them and other staff.
EC, junior staff, and station volunteers will provide on-site, hands on training on station equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
The student applicant is currently pursuing an education in Broadcasting, Media Studies, Business, a related field, or has displayed a previous keen interest in CHLY.
Passionate about / experience with campus / community (public) radio; audio production skills (hardware and software).
Professional oral, written, digital, and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Compensation: Rate of pay is $14.50/hr based on 40 hours/week
