CiTR 101.9 FM is the broadcasting voice of the University of British Columbia, beginning as a student
club in 1937, and gaining not-for-profit status and a place on the FM dial in 1982. Run by the
Student Radio Society of UBC, CiTR offers students and community members broadcast training and
access to the airwaves. CiTR offers alternative coverage of every genre and perspective, with a
mandate to support niche programming and Canadian and local artists. Since 1983, CiTR has also
published Discorder Magazine, providing Vancouver’s best monthly coverage of the local music and
arts scene.
CiTR is looking for a Spoken Word Coordinator to work with all programmers to improve the spoken
word skills and quality of spoken word programming on our airwaves. Spoken word content at CiTR
includes a variety of formats, such as interviews, panels, documentaries, recordings, live broadcasts
and context for music programming. Current spoken word content on our airwaves includes current
affairs, local arts coverage, queer news and arts, environmental issues, sex and dating, debate,
creative writing and ethnic and third language programs.
The Spoken Word Coordinator is responsible for:
 Supporting and facilitating the creation of relevant, high quality public affairs and spoken word
programming
 Coordinating, mentoring and supporting volunteers interested/involved in spoken word
programming
 Leading teams of volunteers to produce live broadcasts and special programming on campus
and in the community
 Creating a structure for collaborative spoken word programs at CiTR, in the form of collectives
or committees, to continue after the completion of this position
 Training and developing CiTR’s spoken word programmers through hands-on training,
mentorship, workshops and the sharing of resources
 Supporting the recruitment and integration of spoken word programmers, and reaching out to
connect and collaborate with under-represented populations on CiTR’s airwaves
 Working with the Program Manager and Programming Committee to review every CiTR
program, provide constructive and meaningful feedback and work with each programmer to
develop skills and strategies to improve each program
 Work with the Program Manager to review CiTR’s spoken word policies and guidelines, and
ensure that programs are compliant with CiTR’s mandate and CRTC regulations
 Promoting CiTR’s spoken word and special programming to our listeners and volunteers
