CHRY Community Radio Inc. is a community-based campus station located at the York University
Keele-campus. CHRY is a highly progressive independent, not-for-profit broadcast environment.
CHRY Radio Inc. supports the growth and development of independent broadcasters and
successfully highlights the strength of under-represented causes, language, culture and genres on
the FM dial.

We are currently seeking a talented and dynamic individual for the position of Spoken Word
Coordinator.

The role of the Spoken Word Co-ordinator will be to support the training, development and growth
of newly recruited and existing locally reflective talk programming throughout the program week.
Programming is generated by volunteers who are supported by the professional training and
resources of CHRY radio.

Responsibilities:
• Recruit and train volunteers for the delivery of locally reflective spoken word programming
• Monitor and develop contributions of spoken word collectives throughout the program week
• Develop and regularly review CHRY spoken word programming guidelines
• Serve on the Program Review Committee and Disciplinary Action Committee (as required)
• Coordinate special events for the Spoken Word Department (live-to-air events, remote broadcasts,
focus/specialty programming, etc…) in conjunction with the Program Coordinator
• Establish and maintain a liaison between CHRY and individuals, communities, local
community groups and progressive organizations whose interests and perspectives are not
typically represented by mainstream media
• Update the CHRY website with Spoken Word (podcast/blog) content

Qualifications: 

• Demonstrate the ability to coordinate and work with people in a community setting
• Adept at voice presentation, digital audio recording, and editing and the ability to train
others
• Manage time effectively to ensure qualitative results
• Have an understanding of the work of campus/community radio stations and a
background in alternative media
• Experience in community organizing and the role of civic-media broadcast training
• Be open-minded to include various perspectives in programming
• Demonstrate innovation and creativity regarding news and current affairs coverage 21-
24 Hours pr/wk

Salary: 

Contract for 12+ months, Approx $15.00 CAN per hour
