
CKDU 88.1 FM is a non-profit campus and community radio station based at Dalhousie University, serving listeners throughout Halifax. Our mandate is to provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters and serve as a forum for diverse and underrepresented voices and artists. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is run by roughly 100 volunteers, a board of directors, and staff members.

CKDU 88.1 FM is looking for a Program Director who is responsible for all aspects of CKDU’s programming lineup. Specifically, this involves managing the program schedule, recruiting, training, and supporting volunteer programmers, and developing diverse programming initiatives.
This is a certified unionized position with SEIU Local 2.
General and administrative duties:
→ Participate and/or facilitate staff meetings using consensus-based decision making
→ Prepare an annual report for members and present it at CKDU’s annual general meeting
→ Respond to any and all queries and requests regarding CKDU’s programming lineup
Programming Duties:
→ Manage, schedule and coordinate all on-air programming, including advertisements and public service announcements
→ Coordinate the production of on-air programming, advertisements and public
service announcements
→ Assist programmers in arranging interviews and in-studio appearances when/if necessary
→ Build partnerships with groups on campus and within the larger community to foster
continuity, quality and relevance in programming;
→ Coordinate CKDU presence at community events (such as DJs, tabing, recording events)
→ Develop and maintain station programming policies per the CRTC and CBSC
→ Work with Programming Committee in areas of program scheduling, assessment and development
→ Handle programming concerns with programmers in conjunction with the programming
Committee
→ Enforce CKDU's discipline policy
→ Manage and monitor on-air program logs to ensure programmer and CKDU compliance with CRTC regulations
→ Work with web developer and IT director to improve and maintain online logger
→ Help plan and participate in programmers meetings or events
→ Develop and implement strategies for growth and improvement within the programming
Department
Communications and Fundraising:
→ Provide support for CKDU membership and community communications
→ Assist in planning and execution of annual campus engagement plan for Dalhousie and King’s
→ Provide support for CKDU's annual fundraising event (Sustainer Drive) and other fundraising initiatives
REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS:
→ A clear understanding and appreciation of campus and community radio
→ Ability and/or demonstrable experience in audio or radio production
→ Ability and/or demonstrable experience of volunteer management and supervision
→ Strong attention to detail, strong analysis and judgement skills
→ Ability and/or demonstrable experience in grassroots fundraising
→ Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work with multiple learning styles
→ Must be self-motivated and willing to take initiative on projects
ASSETS:
→ Experience in the creative non-profit sector in Canada
→ Background in journalism and/or communications
→ Deep familiarity with Halifax’s music communities and institutions as well as emerging trends in podcast production and audio storytelling
→ Experience or skills in grassroots fundraising
→ Experience with or training in consensus decision-making and/or non-hierarchical structures.
CKDU works with a wide range of community members. We expect all staff to uphold our

This includes (but is not limited to) support for racialized, Indigenous, newcomer, trans,
non-binary, and incarcerated programmers as well as programmers with access needs related
to physical and mental health.
Salary: $31,033.60 for 32 hours a week. Administered through Dalhousie University. Paid monthly.
Health and Dental Plan available through Dalhousie University. Six weeks paid vacation. Flexibility in working hours, some remote work possible. Eligible to receive professional development funding.
LOCATION:
The selected candidate must be based or willing to relocate to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
TERMS:
Contract, with possibility of yearly renewal.

CKDU STAFF COLLECTIVE STRUCTURE:
CKDU Staff strives to operate as a collective structure, meaning that all decisions by staff are made through consensus-based decision-making at weekly staff meetings. All staff members are expected to contribute in whatever way they can to larger station-wide activities, most notably the funding drive.
