
CHUO is a fully bilingual campus/community radio station broadcasting on 89.1 FM and located at the University of Ottawa.
CHUO is a not for profit station that provides music, public affairs, informational and cultural programming on issues and viewpoints which are under-represented in mainstream media. CHUO serves both the U of O campus and the surrounding off-campus community. The station broadcasts on 89.1 FM and on 94.3 Rogers HD and on the internet from our website at www.CHUO.fm.
The Program Director is responsible for all aspects of on-air programming. S/He works closely with other staff and volunteers and the Programming Committee to fulfill this objective. The Programming Coordinator acts as a resource for volunteers by offering training and support in producing content along with related departmental activities. The Program Director facilitates station goals and ensures access to the necessary tools to accomplish these goals.
The Program Director is one of three full-time staff, and is a member of the Board of Directors, which meets monthly. Programming at CHUO is produced and hosted entirely by volunteers and covers various under-represented issues and communities, including but not limited to: under-represented and misrepresented musical genres/cultures, independent music, arts and culture, environmental, GBLTQ, First Nations, local and global human rights and social justice, ethnic and third language programming. The format includes non-DJ mixing, DJ mixing, news, interviews, panels, documentaries, readings, live performances, outdoor broadcasts and other creative initiatives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Ensure that all programming is in line with station principles and policies, and CRTC regulations and fulfills requirements for program content, presentation, traffic and continuity
* Recruit, coordinate and motivate volunteers interested and/or involved in on-air programming
*Serve as a resource for CHUO volunteers regarding all matters relating to broadcasting and programming
* Devise and execute recruitment strategies to ensure diverse representation in programming, including the regular advertising of CHUO’s programming needs
* Coordinate the Programming Committee, which includes reviewing new program proposals, allocation of timeslots, current program reviews and long term programming visioning
*Provide opportunities for volunteers wherever possible (develop task lists in conjunction with Volunteer Coordinator)
* Discuss programming concerns with programmers in conjunction with the programming committee, ensure CHUO's programming adheres to the station's mandate and CRTC regulations, monitor programs and program Logs
* Provide formal and informal training and support to volunteers including: technical, interview techniques, research, producing a show, how to write for radio, etc.
* Provide training for volunteers in music and spoken word programming coordination and other activities
* Coordinate work study employees and other temporary positions involved in the department
* Keep the On-Air schedule full and evolving with spoken word and music programming in accordance with CHUO mandate
*Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure CHUO volunteers receive satisfactory training and skills development relating to broadcasting
*Supervise, guide and discipline volunteers as needed while ensuring a positive working environment
*Continually identify new areas for greater diversity in spoken word content with programming committee
*Maintain effective and regular communication with CHUO volunteers, staff and the BoD
*Provide monthly report to CHUO Board of Directors
*Maintain a current and complete volunteer database and email listserve, plus up-to-date physical and digital versions of CHUO's broadcast schedule
* Maintain resources for programmers, information boxes, magazines, info boards, etc
