JOB DESCRIPTION:
Responsibilities: The Community News Coordinator (CN) is a full-time position that is responsible for the coordination of community news volunteers and is part of CKUT’s collective management committee. The CN must ensure that CKUT’s community news programming fulfills its requirements as determined by Canadian broadcast laws, CKUT’s Statement of Principles, and all internal policies, guidelines, rules, and regulations.
The CN is responsible for assisting community news programmers (such as Off the Hour, Native Solidarity News, Morning Afters, Dragonroot Radio, Amandla, and Listening to Latin America) in coordination with interns and the Arts & Culture Coordinator. The CN will also coordinate CKUT’s morning programming (The Morning After) with the Arts & Culture Coordinator. The CN will recruit news volunteers, coordinate regular meetings for special programming or community events, supervise interns, book interviews and resources for news productions, facilitate the weekly community news meeting (every Monday from 6-7pm), and regularly assist volunteers in the needs of the department. The CN will also maintain regular community and campus contact through outreach and events, plus work in coordination with volunteers and staff to host regular radio broadcasts from the community, including, but not limited to: the Homelessness Marathon, Aboriginal Celebrations Day, Decolonization Marathon, Prisoner Justice Week, indigenous youth broadcasts, & Morning After Cafe Remote Series (with Arts & Culture Coord), McGill Daily Campus Remotes, etc.
Along with other staff members, the CN will help organize volunteer training weeks for the integration and training of new volunteers. The CN is a member of CKUT’s Steering Committee, which oversees the daily management of the station. The CN will support other contract workers at CKUT, such as the News Headlines Editor and the Volunteer Coordinator. The CN will work with the Funding Coordinator to secure funding for these and similar future projects through grants. The CN will also support the annual CKUT Funding Drive by notifying programmers, coordinating any special programming and events, and soliciting gifts for donors. The CN will work with community organizations to offer special radio programs to marginalized groups.
Duties:
-Participate in collective management through the steering committee;
-Coordinate news shows;
-Coordinate and evaluate interns and contract workers working alongside the news department;
-Coordinate social media and website content for news department;
-Work with McGill Daily on campus broadcasts and regular news reports;
-Assist in recruiting new members and organize volunteer intake;
-Community events & special broadcasts;
-Facilitate meetings for special events and/or broadcast coordination;
-Community outreach;
-Work with Funding Coordinator in securing grants for projects in the department;
-Lead station orientations for new volunteers;
-Offer training sessions in various aspects of broadcast journalism, podcasting, social media, and tech skills;
-Regular cleaning of the news office and reception area;
-Develop guidelines and manuals;
-Coordinate radio projects with community organizations.
Qualifications:
-Familiarity with CKUT and the Community News Collective
-Experience in script-writing, editing, documentary & technical production
-Experience coordinating volunteers
-Excellent listening skills
-Commitment to working with an anti-oppression framework
-Demonstrated research analysis & presentation skills
-Experience in coordinating community activities
