
CJSF .90.1 FM Radio is Burnaby's campus/community radio station. CJSF is a volunteer organization with
over 150 members, including a board of directors. Members are drawn from the campus of SFU and its
surrounding communities. CJSF Radio’s programming provides music, entertainment, information, issues and
viewpoints which may be underrepresented or unavailable through other media. The station is owned by the
Simon Fraser Campus Radio Society, an independent non-profit organization. See the station’s web site:
CJSF’s music programming consists of a combination of playlist and genre block programming with an overall
emphasis on new music. Examples of genre programming include special interest music releases: traditional
and emerging or contemporary styles of International/World, Classical, Opera, Jazz, Blues and Folk etc.
Releases in sub-genres of Rock, Electronic, R&B, Hip Hop and Country seldom played on other local stations
are also included in the definition of genre programming.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT COORDINATOR POSITION
The Music Department Coordinator is responsible for all aspect of CJSF’s Music Department, including the
music library, charts, acquisitions; and supports the Programming Department’s oversight of music
programming. The Music Department Coordinator provides leadership and direction to departmental volunteers,
workstudies and others to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
OBJECTIVES
To act as primary contact for CJSF's music department and to coordinate the functioning of the department.
To provide continuity in the day-to- day operations of CJSF.
To improve programming by ensuring that music programming draws from a large eclectic, non-mainstream
playlist.
To actively participate in the Programming Sub-Committee (PSC) to oversee programming according to CJSF's
programming mandate and licence commitments
To manage the Music Library and its systems to ensure it is well organized, up-to- date and accessible.
To engage in outreach to music labels and distributors to ensure that CJSF is being serviced with the greatest
number of relevant releases possible.
General Duties
maintain weekly "tracking call" hours in a 5 hour block starting at the same time and occurring on the
same day each week
sort through and listen to releases as they come in
recruit and supervise volunteers to review special interest genre releases as needed
recruit and train volunteers to help out in the department in various ways
add new releases to playlist through weekly "adds"
enter releases into database
print labels and updates to the playlist book kept in the on-air room from database
label/mark up releases and then file releases into playlist and library
monitor theft of music materials and resolve with station manager
monitor program music logs
compile a weekly CJSF top30 and genre music charts through a review of music logs
recruit and supervise volunteers to compile genre charts
send charts to station manager, !earshot and record labels (to ensure servicing from labels)
post charts in on-air studio
circulate a list of new adds to the music library and by email on a regular basis.

research upcoming and current releases
acquire new releases through contact with music industry
assist programmers to find suitable genre music to play
update music library access list with station manager
Day to Day Activities
answer calls and redirect faxes, calls and voice mail messages
open music department emails and mail
maintain tracking call hours and respond to tracking calls and emails as soon as they are received
maintain tidiness and organization of department office and storage space, libraries and playlist
train and supervise volunteers and work/study employees involved in the department
greet folks as they come in
Meeting Participation
attend bi-weekly Executive Committee meetings and regularly held general meetings, and give a report
at such meetings
attend bi-weekly PSC meetings to discuss program approval and evaluation
address any lack of genre music block programming with members of PSC
monitor the quality of existing programs and review new show proposals as member of PSC
support and plan special days of programming through PSC participation
Other
Paid staff members are expected to assist with CJSF's fundraising and promotion programs, act as on-
air announcers in emergencies, assist in hirings and volunteer recruitment, work with the board of
directors to maintain good station communication and attend general and planning meetings of the
Society.
They may also be assigned other duties by the station manager.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
-a commitment to promoting non-commercial media and representing a wide range of cultural works/forms and
points of views, in particular those unavailable in commercial media
-expertise in new and diverse types of music
-excellent computer skills are required; knowledge of database programs an asset
-excellent organisational skills and proven initiative
-ability to work well in a busy, volunteer atmosphere
-knowledge of all aspects of campus/community radio CRTC regulations
-experience with non-commercial media
-previous experience with non-profit agencies preferred
21 hours per week.
Salary of $1742 per month plus extended health and dental and RSP benefits
