The Broadcast Technician manages the complete technical infrastructure at radio emily. The hardware side comprises the installation, maintenance and repair of all broadcasting, audio, office and computer equipment at radio emily. This includes studio equipment (microphones, turntables, CD players, mixing consoles, headphones & speakers), portable audio equipment, computer (studio computer & server) & peripheral hardware, miscellaneous equipment (cables, power supplies etc) and station facilities (lighting etc).
Regarding software, the Broadcast Technician is responsible for the maintenance of radio emily’s servers, computer network services, and workstation. This includes installation and maintenance of open source operating systems and applications, data back-up, and general system administration. The Broadcast Technician also manages and troubleshoots radio emily’s internet stream, program archive, radio log, music database, FTP server, and the corresponding web-based interfaces.
In both categories, the Broadcast Technician is responsible for research and development with regards to new hardware, software and web-based solutions and proposing projects that benefit radio emily and its members.
The position entails:
1. Interacting with a variety of people on a daily basis - providing technical support, answering questions and demonstrating proper use of equipment
2. Equipment repairs, preventative maintenance and system administration on a regular schedule
3. Being on call during broadcasting hours for technical emergencies - if a major technical problem arises, you will be called and expected to help solve the problem. This may involve coming to the station at Emily Carr University of Art + Design
4. Holding technical training sessions (Other administrative staff would help)
5. Screen and prioritize technical fault reports
6. Attend monthly staff meetings and participate in consensus-based decision making
1. Knowledge of Linux (Fedora) operating system and open source software
2. Experience with Mac OS, not needed but a plus!
3. Ability to build and maintain servers and workstations
4. Network administration in an open source environment
5. Proficiency with shell scripting, HTML, PHP and MySQL
6. Good troubleshooting skills, and ability to prioritize tasks
7. Knowledge of audio equipment and setup
8. Communication and people skills, patience when dealing with less tech-savvy persons
9. Experience with audio recording and editing
10. Knowledge of FreeBSD (server) operating system
11. Knowledge of radio emily or other campus/community radio stations (not needed but a plus!)
5 hrs/week (could be remote), M-F on call IT support, monthly Honorarium of $205/mo
