
CKDU-FM is a non-profit campus and community radio station based at Dalhousie University serving
listeners throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality. Our mandate is to provide an alternative to
private and public broadcasters and serve as a forum for diverse and under-represented voices and
artists. The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is run by roughly 150 volunteers, a
volunteer board of directors, and 5 permanent part-time staff.
Job Description:
The Broadcast Technician manages the complete technical infrastructure at CKDU.
The hardware side comprises the installation, maintenance and repair of all broadcasting, audio, office
and computer equipment at CKDU. This includes studio equipment (microphones, turntables, CD
players, mixing consoles, headphones & speakers), portable audio equipment (Zoom & Marantz
portable recorders, PA system, DJ equipment), computer & peripheral hardware, miscellaneous
equipment (cables, power supplies etc) and station facilities (lighting etc).
Regarding software, the Broadcast Technician is responsible for the maintenance of CKDU's servers,
workstations and computer network services. This includes installation and maintenance of opensource
operating systems and applications, data back-up, and general system administration. The
Broadcast Technician also manages and troubleshoots CKDU's web stream, program archive, radio
log, music database, FTP server, and the corresponding web-based interfaces.
In both categories, the Broadcast Technician is responsible for research and development with
regards to new hardware, software and web-based solutions and proposing projects that benefit
CKDU and its members.
Duties & Responsibilities:
· Interact with a variety of people on a daily basis - providing technical support, answering
questions and demonstrating proper use of equipment
· Equipment repairs, preventative maintenance and system administration on a regular schedule
· Be on call 24/7 for technical emergencies - if a major technical problem arises, you will be
called and expected to help solve the problem. This may involve coming to the station
· Hold weekly technical training sessions
· Screen and prioritize technical fault reports
· Attend weekly staff meetings and participate in consensus-based decision making
· Monitor transmitter performance once per month at the CBC transmitter site in Fairview
Essential Skills:
· Soldering and wiring skills
· Knowledge of Linux (Fedora) operating system and open source software
· Ability to build and maintain servers and workstations
· Network administration in an open source environment
· Proficiency with shell scripting, HTML, PHP and MySQL
· Good troubleshooting skills
· Knowledge of audio equipment and setup
Other Assets:
· Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
· Communication and people skills, patience when dealing with less tech-savvy persons
· Experience with audio recording and editing
· Knowledge of FreeBSD (server) operating system
· Knowledge of CKDU or other campus/community radio stations
Hours and compensation:
Hours: 26 hours per week, flexible.
Hourly wage: $15.75 per hour.
