Farm Radio International is a new partner in the Uniterra Program (volunteer sending program operated by WUSC and CECI). We have just posted our first volunteer opportunity - it's a 2 year position based at our office in Arusha, Tanzania.

The volunteer receives a decent monthly living allowance and housing allowance (I can provide more details upon request). The Uniterra Program will support (flights, medical insurance and living allowance) of up to 2 dependents of the person hired.  For this position we are looking for someone with extensive journalism experience and experience training others, who could help build the skills of our two African bureau chiefs and network of freelance writers for Barza Wire - our weekly electronic newsletter for broadcasters featuring news stories relevant to African small-scale farmers.

Develop the capacity of Barza Wire Bureau Chiefs and freelance writers

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Barza Wire team, including Bureau Chiefs, to identify areas where capacity development of Bureau Chiefs and freelance writers is required
  • Facilitate one or more capacity development trainings for Bureau Chiefs and freelance writers
  • Coordinate the production of Barza Wire
  • Work with the Barza Wire team which includes two Bureau Chiefs, Farm Radio International’s Digital Resources Coordinator and Farm Radio International’s Managing Editor to create a production schedule for the year, identifying international days to highlight, inviting pitches on specific topics, and scheduling non-publishing weeks
  • Work with the Southern Africa Bureau Chief (in Malawi) and the Francophone West Africa Bureau Chief (in Burkina Faso) to source stories
  • Network with Uniterra offices in Africa to identify stories related to Uniterra sectors of interest to small-scale farmers that can be written by freelance writers and published in Barza Wire
  • Encourage Farm Radio International staff in African country offices to contribute stories for Barza Wire
  • Produce and edit content for Barza Wire
  • Scan African news sources for stories of particular relevance to small-scale farmers
  • Discuss story selection during weekly story meetings
  • Conduct further research on news stories of interest and re-package these news stories in a format suitable for on-air use (approximately 1 news stories per week)
  • Prepare regular non-news items
  • Work in collaboration with Farm Radio International’s Digital Resources Coordinator, Managing Editor, and Translator to copy edit and finalize all content in English and French
  • Assist with monitoring and evaluating Barza Wire
  • Work with the Barza Wire team, including Bureau Chiefs, to develop subscriber surveys and write reports
  • Work with Farm Radio International’s Hangar team and Broadcaster Resources Department to develop and implement new systems and tools for soliciting real time feedback from subscribers on the stories they need and use
  • Assist with promoting Barza Wire and increasing interactions with subscribers
  • Help Farm Radio International develop a strategy for increasing the number of Barza Wire subscribers
  • Work with Farm Radio International’s Hangar team to develop and implement new systems and tools for alerting subscribers to relevant stories, soliciting story ideas from subscribers, and tracking access and use by subscribers
  • Explore using tools, such as Whatsapp, for connecting with potential subscribers

 

 

Qualifications: 

University degree or college diploma in journalism, and additional studies in international development, or agriculture and food security
Exceptional writing and editing skills
At least 3 years’ experience working in a news, radio, or other media organization, including 1 year of direct involvement in writing and editing items for radio broadcast
Experience in adult education and/or coaching and training people in journalistic skills
Knowledge of rural development issues and challenges in Africa, particularly those related to agriculture
Knowledge of gender and development issues, and capacity to develop news stories that are gender-sensitive and promote women’s equality
Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills
Oral and written fluency in English
Ability to speak, read and write French is an asset
Familiarity with common style guides, especially Canadian Press style
