CFRU turns 30!

CFRU-FM, the community-based campus station at the University of Guelph, turns 30 on January 28, 2010!

Radio at the University of Guelph dates back to 1939 when there was a credit course in radio broadcasting offered by the Ontario Agricultural College. In 1969 Radio Gryphon, named after the university mascot, began regular programming to cafeterias and student lounges through a closed circuit system.

Finally in 1980 they were CFRU-FM, reaching Guelph and beyond.

This past year the station raised more than $10,000 from their listeners for a new transmitter (and 250 W of power) and are participating in an international soundscape project with groups from Australia and Northern Ireland that will be featured at the Guelph Jazz Festival.

Congratulations to CFRU! (And to Guelph!) For more information go to www.cfru.ca or click the title of this post.

25 years on the FM dial! (And 55 years of campus radio....)

On October 17th, 1955, the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta ran a 15-minute program called Varsity Vista on CFAC radio. Five years later, a campus radio club was founded. By 1972 an AM and cable broadcast had been added and the station was on-air 24 hours a day.

Then on January 15 1985, CJSW-FM in Calgary started broadcasting with the Talking Heads song "Once in a lifetime".

To celebrate their 25 years on the FM dial, the station is kicking off a year-round celebration. And the good times start this weekend....on Saturday, January 23 CJSW has invited some of the most beloved Calgary bands of the past and present, including Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, Tinderbox and Chad VanGaalen, to perform for the city's music fans.

Congratulations to CJSW-FM (who also recently moved into beautiful new studio and office space). Here's to another 25 years!

This year the NCRA submitted recommendations in conjunction with our colleagues at l'Association des radios communautaires (ARC) and l'Association des radiodiffuseurs communautaires du Quebec (ARC-Q).

We will be appearing on Monday, January 18th in Gatineau, Quebec and many NCRA members will also be presenting throughout the week.

The agenda is here: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/Broadcast/eng/HEARINGS/2010/ag01_18.htm.

Eighth annual Homelessness Marathon from CKUT-FM

This year's Homelessness Marathon will broadcast live from the streets of Montreal, and several other locations across Canada, on Tuesday, February 23rd, starting at sunset and running all night long until sunrise on Wednesday, February 24th.

It will once again serve up 14 hours of people-powered radio, providing an opportunity for homeless people and their supporters to take to the airwaves, and allow a nationwide discussion on homelessness issues and possible solutions. Reaching out to every listener, the audio for the Homelessness Marathon is available for free to all non-commercial broadcasters via the Internet.

Last year, 40 stations carried the Homelessness Marathon. The participation of community radio stations from across Canada is vital for the Marathon to achieve its goals. For more information, click on the title of this post.
