NCRA Board By-Election!

The academic year has begun and we’re having a by-election!

We’re recruiting for an Indigenous Representative on the NCRA/ANREC Board of Directors. In addition to executing his or her responsibilities as a Director, the role of the Indigenous Representative is to be a voice for Indigenous people and Indigenous radio at the national level, in the work of the NCRA. In accordance with the NCRA by-law provisions (Section 4, 1.17, b, v.), the Indigenous Representative must be from the First Nations, Métis, or Inuit peoples of Canada.

The Board would like to thank Larry Portelance, who previously held this position, for his years of service.

The elected candidate will serve on the Board until the 36th National Campus and Community Radio Conference in June 2017. The time commitment is approximately 10-25 hours per month for Board and committee meetings and associated action items.

To participate as a candidate in the by-election, please complete and return the Board Nomination Form (available upon request) to ophirancra@gmail.com by Sunday, October 11 at 5pm PT / 7pm CT / 9pm AT. On October 30, the list of candidates and voting instructions will be distributed by email to NCRA members. The election will conclude on November 19 at 5pm PT / 7pm CT / 9pm AT.

Board composition requirements:

1. Station Representation: No one station can have more than one representative on the NCRA Board, with the exception of the Indigenous seat, as outlined in Section 4, 1.17, b, x. of our by-laws. Therefore, any NCRA Member station is encouraged to put forward a candidate in this by-election. Nominees from community stations are especially encouraged as there is currently only one Director from a community station.

2. Regional Representation: Directors on the existing board represent five of our six regions of Canada, thus fulfilling the Association's regional requirements as outlined in Section 4, 1.17, b, iv. of our by-laws. Even though our minimum requirements for regional representation have been met, we particularly encourage candidates from the remaining region to consider candidacy for the vacant seat. Regions currently represented on our board are Pacific, Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic. Not currently represented is Northern Canada (Nunavut, NWT, and Yukon).

3. Gender Representation: We have currently met requirements outlined in Section 4, 1.17, b, viii. of the NCRA by-laws, that the Board of Directors be composed of at least 50% women, so there are no gender restrictions on nominees.

Please share this notice with anyone who you think would be good for this role. If you have any questions about running for the NCRA Board, I’d be happy to answer them. You can also contact our President, Johnnie Regalado (director@uvic.ca), and our ED, Barry Rooke (barryncra@gmail.com).

Good luck!
